If your SWC refuses to do homework, maybe homework isn’t the issue.

How many battles have you fought with your SWC over homework? We SWCs don’t relish the thought of doing more schoolwork after we’ve left the classroom. The idea that we must also devote our spare time to doing something we could barely endure all day long seems ridiculous. If you assume we should do the homework just because it’s assigned, you’ll have a battle on your hands almost every time. Remember, your SWC needs an answer to the question “What’s the point?”

SWCs want to know why we should spend time and effort doing something. We’re not just being smart alecks. We truly want to know the answer to the question. If we understand the purpose of the homework (and sometimes the explanation can be as simple as “It’s just a necessary hoop to jump through”), we can make a conscious decision as to whether it’s worth our efforts to do it.

Remember, SWCs know there are consequences for not doing homework, but we also believe we can choose to take the consequences. As much as a parent may not want to think about this, the fact is you cannot force your SWC to do the homework. We can be motivated, inspired, and held accountable, but we cannot be forced to do homework against our will. Many parents end up doing the work themselves. Some yell and scream and punish, but almost all those parents end up being the ones who suffer the most. Your high blood pressure, your headaches, your ulcers won’t help an SWC get the homework done.

So what can you do? Here are some suggestions:
